LaFayette Birdsell for many years an honored resident of the town of Varick died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Emma Carpenter in Watkins, on Wednesday, Feb. 24. He was born in what is now part of Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co., Sept., 20, 1824. In 1852 he was united in marriage with Miss Eliza Fuge, moving to Varick a few years prior to the Civil War. Here he had his residence until some years after the death of his wife, with the infirmity of age and failing health he went to live with his widowed daughter at Watkins. He was a soldier in the Civil war, enlisting in the 148th regiment N. Y. volunteers, and was honorably discharged at the close of the war June 22, 1865. In Varick where most of the years of his active life were spent, he is remembered as the kind and helpful neighbor and the good citizen. The remains were brought to Kendaia on the morning train Saturday, accompanied by his son Grant Birdsell, of Washington, D. C., and daughters, Mrs. Emma Carpenter and Miss Mary Birdsell, who survive him. Funeral services were held in the Kendaia Baptist church at 10 a. m., the Rev. J. H. Cook, of the Wesleyan church officiating, assisted by Rev. B. F. Himes of the Baptist church. Burial in the family lot in the Baptist cemetary.
