Biography

William Birkin married Mary Ann Fletcher in St Johns Anglican Church, Creswick, Victoria on 1 May 1871.[1] They had the following children:

[13] OBITUARY. MR. WILLIAM BIRKIN. The death occurred on Sunday last of another very old resident of this district in the person of Mr. William Birkin, of "Fairview," Coonong, at the great age of 91 years. Mr. Birkin was a native or Nottingham, England, and came to Australia 80 years ago, and resided at Creswick, Victoria for 20 years. He afterwards, moved to "Fairview," Coonong, where he resided for 60 years and carried on pastoral pursuits. He was married at Creswick to Miss Mary Ann Fletcher. During his long residence at "Fairview," Mr. Birkin made many friends and earned the high esteem of all with whom he came in contact. He was an excellent neighbour and a true friend. As a resident he was ever ready to do his share towards any movement that had for its object the welfare of his locality. He was a successful pastorallst and was a good judge of stock. Deceased is survived by his widow and a family of four sons and nine daughters. The sons are William (Melbourne), Edward, ("Fairview," Coonong), Leslie ("Red Bank," Bundure Siding), and Sydney (Boree Creek). Edward saw service in the South African war, and Leslie and Sydney served in the Great War. The daughters are Catherine (Mrs. H. A. Arnold, "Daisy Lodge," Carrathool), Miss Alice ("Fairview," Coonong), Margaret (Mrs. Stewart, Sydney), Miss Mary ("Fairview," Coonong), Miss Emily (nurse at the War Memorial Hospital, Sydney), Ethel (Mrs. R. Stewart, Booligal), Mabel (Mrs. Pearce, Boree Creek), Miss Rosemund Maud (nurse, Sydney), and Miss Bessie ("Fairview," Coonong). The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, leaving the home of the deceased at Coonong for Narandera, where the remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the cemetery. The bearers were Messrs. A. E. Bull, J. L. Bull, Edward Birkin, and —. Arnold (grandson). The Ven. Archdeacon Rawling officiated at the graveside. Mr. F. Lindley had charge of the funeral arrangements.
