Biography

Margaret Black was born in Liverpool, England on 9th June 1867 and baptised in St Nicholas Roman Catholic Church the same day by James R Hennessy. Her parents were William Black and Robina Allan and her god mother was Agnes Jordan.[1] She seems the only child to have recceived a Catholic baptism.

By 1871, the family had moved back to Glasgow and Margaret, aged 3, was living with them at 40 Rose Street, Hutchesontown. [2]"Scotland Census 1871"

By 1881, they had moved to Blythswood in the Govan area of Gasgow and Margaret, aged 14 was a scholar. [3]

By 1891, "Maggie", now 23, was a French Polisher. She still lived at home with her family at 359 Mathieson Street in Hutchesontown. [4]

on 14th June 1895, she married William McKnight in Camlachie, Glasgow however, her usual address at this time was in Kilwinning, Ayrshire. Although baptised a Catholic they were married by John McRay, a Minister of the Original Seccession Church. Witnesses were John Gordon and Maggie's sister Robina Allan Black. [5]

Their daughter Robina McKnight was born in Kilwinning in 1897 [6] and daughter Jessie McKnight was born in Stevenston in 1900. [7]

In 1901, the family was living at Thistle Cottage in Stevenston. [8]

Their third child, Alexander McKnight was born at the family address in Shore Road Stevenston in 1903. [9]

Following William's death in 1907, [10], Maggie took the family to Newmilns in the parish of Loudon, Ayrshire. Their address there was 6 Greenside. Boarding with them was Maggie's sister, Robina Black. Maggie's skills as a French Polisher probably took her to Newmilns as she was employed by a furniture manufacturer. [11]

She died in 1960 in the district of Ardrossan and Saltcoats, aged 93. [12]
