Herbert was born on July 2, 1894 in St. John's, Newfoundland. He was a son of William Walker Blackall and Ida Constance F. Hele.[1][2]
He served 16 months with the Newfoundland militia before enlisting with the 145th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on March 3, 1916 at Moncton, New Brunswick.[2]
The 145th was a united mainly composed of men from the Albert, Westmorland and Kent counties of New Brunswick and was later perpetuated as the New Brunswick Regiment. The unit went overseas on the ship S.S. Tuscania from Halifax on September 25 and served mainly in France.
With much of the 145th, he was transferred to the 9th Reserve Battalion upon arrival in England. He then joined with the 49th Battalion upon arrival in France in 1917.[2]
He was killed in action in France on October 30, 1917 and was interred at the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Poperinge, France.[3] He was also memorialized at the Cambrai Memorial in Louverval [4] and the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres.[5]
