Annie was born in Portobello, MIdlothian, Scotland, on 17 June 1881, the daughter of Harry Blake and Jessie Wilson. Her father died when she was 3 and she was brought up in the temperance hotel in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, belonging to her grandparents, James and Catherine Wilson. When she left school, she started working in the hotel, which she helped her mother and aunt to run after the death of her grandmother in 1904. She never married. She died in Dunfermline on 25 January 1973, aged 91.
