Mrs. Martha B. Rule Dies at Age of 97
An outstanding career of motherhood came to an end with the death last night of Mrs. Martha Blalock Rule, mother of Dr. A.L. Rule here and widow of a pioneer Baptist circuit rider. Mrs. Rule was 97 years 11 months and two days old. She died at the Maryville home of a daughter, Mrs. M.D. Baker, with whom she lived with Dr. Rule, 2445 East Magnolia Avenue. The several Rule children, some of them white-haired now, were her step children. She came into the home as the second wife of the late Rev. Caleb Rule when they were young, and they thought of her as mother. When Mr. Rule rode the mountains as a circuit minister, the homeplace was at Pleasant Hill in Sevier county, on what is now Chapman Highway. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church. Burial in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Other survivors are a daughter, Mrs. W.R. Froneberger, Maryville; sons, G.F. Rule, Knoxville; O.A. and H.D. Rule, Etowah; M.R. Rule, Maryville and John Rule, Sevierville; and a sister, Mrs. Laura Proffitt, Newport. Among grandchildren is Dr. Kenneth Rule, General Hospital intern.
