Lewis ‘Lou' G. Blaney Race car driver owned lumber co., speedway The Sharon Herald Tue Jan 27, 2009, 02:24 PM EST

Lewis "Lou" G. Blaney of Hartford passed away Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a long illness. He was 69.

Mr. Blaney was born Jan. 4, 1940, in Hartford, a son of George and Peg Pfouts Blaney.

Lou was a graduate of the former Hartford High School .

He retired as an owner of Blaney Lumber and Sharon Speedway.

He was a member of Hartford United Methodist Church.

Lou was well known in the Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York areas as a race car driver. He began his career in racing with his father, George, in 1958, and continued to drive for various owners such as Bill Thomas of Hermitage and the Crash Brothers of Greenville.

Throughout his 47 years of racing, he amassed more than 600 wins in sprint and modified cars. He had been inducted into the "Dirt" Car Hall of Fame, the Circle Track Club of Pittsburgh Hall of Fame, the Sharon Speedway Hall of Fame and, most recently, the Lernerville Speedway Hall of Fame.

When the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame opened auto racing as a sport to be honored, Lou was the first inductee.

He will be missed by his many race fans, especially by his good friend and former crew chief, Rudy Carpenter.

He is survived by: his wife, Kate Keir Blaney, whom he married Aug. 13, 1960; two sons, David Blaney and his wife Lisa, High Point, N.C.; and Dale Blaney, Hartford; five grandchildren, Emma, Ryan and Erin Blaney, all High Point; and Leah Blaney and Ashley Carson, both Hartford; a sister and brother-in-law, Marianne and Robert Bates and their children, Tom, Rick and Luanne Bates; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tom and Sandy Keir and their children, Stephen Keir and Amy Nason.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Gary Blaney.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the GEOAC Alzheimer's Association, 1815 W. Market St., Suite 301, Akron 44313.

Calling hours: Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. today (1-27-09) in Hartford United Methodist Church, 6846 state Route 305.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Wednesday (1-28-09) in the church.

Burial: Hartford Township Cemetery.
