Harriet Mary Blaxland was born on 15th November 1798 in Newington, Kent, England. She was the eldest daughter of John Blaxland and Harriet de Marquet, and niece of Australian explorer, Gregory Blaxland.
The Blaxland brothers and their families migrated to the Colony of New South Wales (Australia) aboard John's ship, the Brothers, arriving in April 1807. Receiving a substantial grant of land by the Parramatta River, he name it Newington.
Harriet married Alexander Macdonald Ritchie at Calcutta, Bengal, India on 3 June 1816. [1] They had three known children.
Harriet married widower James Dowling, a judge, in 1835 in St John's Church of England (now Anglican Cathedral), Parramatta, New South Wales. [2] James was knighted in 1838; Harriet becoming entitled as Lady Dowling. James passed away in 1844, in Woolloomooloo, New South Wales. Harriet's father died in 1845 at Newington and mother in 1852 in Parramatta.
Aged 82 years, she passed away on 31 March 1881 in Bromley, Kent. [3][4]
