Biography
Jerome S Blum was born 27 March 1884 in Chicago, Illinois [1][2]He had four siblings: Ernst Julius Johannes, born 1869 in Germany, [3] Richard Julius Johannes born in Germany in 1870,[4] Max julius Richard, born 30 July 1875 in Berlin, Germany [5]
He was the son of middle-class, hardworking German immigrants. Jerome's father, Julius Blum, [6]wanted him to learn a trade rather than follow his instincts to become and artist. His mother did, however, strongly support his wish to be an artist. A family visit in 1893 to the South Seas exhibition at the World's Colombian Exposition and a holiday in Munich in 1902 were sources of inspiration for Jerome. While he was in Munich, he studied painting at a small art school then, in 1905 his studies at the John Francis Smith Art Academy began.
In 1912, in Paris, Jerome married Lucille Swan (1887 - 1965), a sculptor he met at the Academy, in Paris. Jerome studied for about a year under Luc Olivier-Merson in the Ecole des Beaux Arts, then, dissatisfied with his training he sought greater satisfaction and excitement in discussions about art and life at numerous cafés. Jerome and Lucille travelled together to Corsica, Cuba, China, Japan, Tahiti and eventually settled in Greenwich Village, New York City.[7][8]They were both prolific artists who worked while they traveled. Jerome also travelled in the American West and to Europe and North Africa. He held exhibitions in New York, Chicago, Boston, and Philadelphia. By the late 1920s Blum began to write short stories and other literary pieces which were published in periodicals such as 'The New Republic' and 'American Spectator'. Lucille and Jerome were divorced in 1924. [9][10]
Jerome's second wife was Frances Baum (1895 - 1970)
Pictures painted by Jerome Blum were shown in1931at the Whitney Museum of American Art, in 1932 at the Galerie de la Renaissance in Paris, in 1933 and 1935 at the Delphic Studios in Manhattan and in the Century of Progress exhibition held in Chicago in 1934. Jerome had a one-person exhibition at Gump’s Gallery in San Francisco in 1936. [11]
Between 1935 and 1936 Jerome contracted a life-threatening illness which caused mental exhaustion and required that he be hospitalised. In the 1950 Census he is 66 years old and resident in the house of Georgiana Bossing (57) in Dutchess, New York, along with twenty eight other residents. [12] He never painted again and died in Poughkeepsie, New York, 25 July 1956, age 72. [13]His works continue to be exhibited. [14][15]
