Ely Douglas Boakes aka Eli Boakes was born in 1859 in Upchurch, Kent, England to John Abraham Boakes and Mary Ann (Rayfield) Boakes. His birth was registered in Milton, Kent in the second quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Rayfield.[1]
Eli Douglas Boakes, son of John Abraham & Mary Ann, was christened on 7 Jul 1859 in Upchurch.[2]
In 1861 Eli Boaks (age 2) lived at Susans Green in Upchurch with his father John (42, Ag Lab), mother Mary A (42), and three siblings: Frances (9), John (8), and William (6).[3]
Eli's mother passed away in 1863. His father remarried in 1867, to the widow Sarah Epps (nee Ball).
In 1871 Eli Bookes (age 12, Employed in Gravel Pit), with his father John (52, Labourer in Brickfield) and stepmother Sarah (52), were lodgers in Faversham, Kent in the household of Edward Mills (34, Licensed Victualler) - also in the household were Edward's wife and three children, his aunt, another lodger, and a servant.[4]
In 1881 Ely Douglas Boakes (age 21, Agricl Labourer) was a lodger in Upchurch in the household of the widow Mary Ann Andrews (43) - also in the household were Mary's son George Andrews (12, Scholar) and lodger Wm Smith (33, Agricl Labourer).[5]
Eli Boakes passed away in 1886, aged 27 years. His death was registered in Milton in the last quarter of the year.[6] He was buried in Upchurch on 17 Nov 1886.[7]
