Biography

On 19 Jun 1917, William Allan Boase applied to become an Australian War Worker, working as a bricklayer in the UK for the duration of the War. He stated he was born in Dundee, Scotland around 1870 and was married. It seems he was actually born in Belfast, Ireland in 1866, the son of Richard Bowes and his wife Mary Ann nee Allen.

By 1871 he was living with his parents in Dundee, Scotland with his parents and 2 siblings.[1] In 1881 he is still living with his parents (and 1 sibling) in Dundee and is a jute mill worker.[2]

William migrated to Australia prior to 1890. In 1890 he married Agnes Christie in Victoria. There were 8 children (Victoria BDM has 5 born between 1891 and 1909).

In 1909 he was living in in Brunswick, VIC and gave his occupation as bricklayer.[3]

When he applied to become an Australian War Worker in 1917 he was living in West Brunswick, VIC and his occupation was bricklayer, working with bricks, concrete or stone.

He was accepted as an Australian War Worker on 27 Jun 1917 and was issued with Australian War Worker Badge No. 900. He departed Australia on the "Medic" on 01 Aug 1917, arriving at Liverpool, England on 12 Oct 1917.

He commended work as a bricklayer at RNAS Creswell on 16 Oct 1917. He worked at a number of places over the next 14 months, including the Grave Boarding Establishment, Spondon; Messrs Holloway Bros.; Messrs P & W Anderson Hitchin; Messrs McAlpine & Sons; and Messrs Boats & Son, Chepstow.

He had injured his thigh with a heavy load of stone and was unable to work in the early part of 1919 so was returned to Australia on the SS "Irishman", departing Avonmouth on 08 May 1919, disembarking in Port Melbourne on 07 Jul 1919. His agreement was considered completed the same day.

In 1924 he was living in Oakleigh, VI and gave his occupation as builder.[4]

He died in Melbourne Hospital on 24 Oct 1930.

William Allan Boase is my great grandfather. I always thought he was born in Dundee but this clearly indicates Belfast and perhaps under the name Bowes. If anyone can provide further info would be greatly appreciated
