Biography

Gilbert Bogart was born about 1798. He is the son of Jacob Bogart and Mary Brokaw.

Research Notes

Record for Dr. Jacob Bogart 268. Dr. Jacob Bogart, son of Gilbert Bogart (260) and Metje Brokaw, was baptized in Bucks County, Pa., August 16, 1772. His mother died at his birth and his father in 1779 when Jacob was seven years of age. His maternal grandfather, Bergon Becaw, Sr. was appointed his guardian in 1779 and in 1781, John Brocaw, Jr., of Bridgewater succeeded him as guardian. On May 9, 1786, Andrew Andrew Van Mittleswaert, his uncle (husband of his Aunt Sarah) was appointed guardian. Jacob is mentioned in his grandfather's will dated May 15, 1777, to wit. - "I give to my grandson, Jacob Bogart the black mare." Dr. Bogart married Mary Brokaw, daughter of John Brokaw, Jr. and May Van Der Veer, who was born in Somerset County, N. J., in 1776 and died in West Sparta, Livingston County, New York in 1862. For a short time Dr. Bogart lived in Millstone County, where his children were born. Shortly after 1800 he settled with his family in Owasco, Victory Township, Cayuga County, N.Y., where he was a practicing physician until his death in 1823. He was one of the organizers of the Cayuga County Medical Society and served as its first secretary in 1806. He was a witness to the will of Elsie Schenck, April 19, 1815. Letters of Administration on his estate dated February 26, 1823. She died in West Sparta in her eighty-sixth year.
