Following a brief enlistment, from 11th August to 14th December 1942, in the Royal Australian Air Force during the Second World War, [2] Stewart served in the Second Australian Imperial Force; enlisted on 19th January 1943 and was demobilised on 2nd October 1945. Allocated to the Australian Artillery as a Gunner, Stewart was a member of 16th Australian Field Regiment. [3] His father was listed as next-of-kin on both engagements, indicating that Stewart was still single during that period.
