Biography

Joseph Samuel Borghardt Sr was born in Jamestown, Missouri in 1881 to Christian and Charlotte (Schmidt) Borghardt, both born in Germany, who were among a large migration of Gemans to the USA after the failed 1848 democratic revolution there. The family name was recorded as Burkhart in some early US census records, and is the way some but not all descendants still pronounce it. Joseph married Lula Mae Hickam in 1911 -- and he owned and operated farms in both Cole and Callaway counties, Missouri, the last being next to the Middle River bridge between New Bloomfield and Fulton on the old 2-lane US Highway 54, and which burned to the ground in the early 1970s. He and his wife lost several children in infancy, but raised 2 sons and 4 daughters. His youngest, namesake son was killed by Nazis during the Liberation of France in 1944. Joseph Sr died in 1958. His surname was spelled Borchard in Germany by forebearers; then Borchardt, Burkhart, and finally Borghardt in US Census records.
