Doris was the daughter of Margarethe Otterson and August Bormann. She was born near Hanover, Germany, in 1878.
Doris' mother was sister to Doris Otterson Ohlrogge, Mrs. Fritz Ohlrogge, who also lived in Ottertail.
She married Henry Cordes on oct 18, 1900.
Henry was the son of herman and Charlotte Winter Cordes. He was 13 when he arrived in the US, and he received only one year of schooling in America.
They were the parents of 10 children: Herman, Hertha, Emma, Bettie, Clara, Walter, Edwin, Norbert, Gerhard, and LaVern.
Henry and Doris Cordes purchased 160 acres from his father. They had two years previously purchased an adjoining 120 acres, which completed his farm of 280 acres.
Henry and Doris added much to the value of their farm by building a large barn, 40 x 84 feet, with two silos, 12 x 34, which were completed in 1909. Two years previously, they had rebuilt a large and modern house. They later added a number of sheds for machinery and for the comfort of the many hogs and fine Guernsey cattle.
Henry owned his own threshing outfit, but only threshed for himself and nearby neighbors.
Henry and Doris were active members of the Germany Lutheran Church, where Henry was on the board for over six years. He was also treasurer of the school board, director of the creamery company, and held the office of vice president with the telephone company of Ottertail and Henning.
