William Bowden was born in Middlesex, England.

Early Years

William Richard Wooten Bowden was born about 1877 at Hornsey, London, his birth registered between Jan-Mar 1877 at Edmonton, Middlesex, England.^[1] He was the son of William Hancock Bowden and Lydia Wooten.

William was the third of four children born to William and Lydia:

1. Elizabeth Bowden, born 1873
2. Kate Lydia Bowden, born 1874
3. William Richard Wooten Bowden, born 1877
4. Fanny Mary Ann Bowden, born 1880

In the 1881 census of Great Yarmouth, William was age 4 and living at George Street with his father William (36), a draper, mother Lydia (38), and siblings Kate Lydia (6) and Fanny M Bowden (0). [Note: The surname in this record was spelled as 'Bowdon'; however all the family details agree with this being the correct identity.]^[2]

In the 1891 census of Islington, William was age 14, working as an office boy and living at Hornsey Street with his father William H Bowden (46), a travelling draper, his mother Lydia (44), and sisters Kate L (16) and Fanny M A (10).^[3]

Adult Years

William's father died about 1901, aged 56, his death registered between Jan-Mar 1901 at Islington, London.

In the 1901 census of Islington on 31 March, William was age 23, a warehouse clerk living at Hornsey Street, Lower Holloway, with his widowed mother Lydia (58), and sisters Kate (26) and Fanny (20).^[4]

In the electoral register of 1911, William was recorded as living in a one room back parlour furnished at 15 Hornsey Street, Islington with his mother Lydia Bowden.^[5]

In the 1911 census of Islington, William was age 34, working as a warehouse clerk in the brush making industry and living with his mother Lydia (69), and his sister Kate (36).^[6]

William married Alice Louise Howard, their marriage registered between Jul-Sep 1913 at Islington, London.^[7]
