Mary signed her name, Anthony made is mark with a cross. Mary's maiden name and parents were confirmed when her daughter Emma was christened in 1826. Mary was the daughter of George Bowers, a shoemaker from Buxton and his wife Sarah. George later became a farmer. The family surname is recorded as Bower and Bowers in different records.
