John James Boyd was born on 2 December 1850 in Hull, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom as the son of Robert Boyd (FamilySearch Profile) and Sarah Robson (FamilySearch Profile).[1] He was baptized on 11 April 1852.[2]
In 1861, John J (8) was a son, Scholar, in the household of Robert Boyd (45) in Drypool St Andrew, Yorkshire East Riding, England, United Kingdom. [3]

In 1908 John started a Zoo in Aramoho near Wanganui. Poor attendances meant a move to Auckland was made in 1911. He bought 6 1/2 acres on Symonds Street near Trafalgar Street and ran his Zoo until 1922. It held 600 to 2000 specimens including several lions, bears, wolves, flamingos, and other exotic animals. Most of the animals were kept in relatively poor conditions. There was an abattoir on site where local stray animals such as horses and cats were slaughtered to be fed to the captive animals.[7] It was a point of contention for the Onehunga Borough Council and the 1917 election had the Zoo issue as it's main point of interest.
John won election as Mayor of Onehunga but soon ran into problems when he voted on a resolution about the Zoo. He was removed from office after several court cases.[8]
Boyd's Zoo was closed in 1922 with some of the animals going to private collectors and some being the nucleus of Auckland Zoo. The location of the Zoo is in the vicinity of Boyd Ave, Royal Oak today.
John died on 17 January 1928 in Wellington, New Zealand, aged 77.[9] He was buried in Karori Cemetery and Crematorium, Wellington, Wellington City, Wellington, New Zealand (plot: Public 1, Plot 115 K).[10] [11]
John's estate passed probate in 1928 in Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand.[12]
