Biography

Richard Brain bap 11 Aug 1784 at Chislehurst son of William and Mary. Richard and Mary Brain were living at Greenwich when they had children baptized there in 1820 to 1824. They moved to New Cross in Surrey about 1825 and apparently stayed there until they died. Richard Brain bap 1784 Chislehurst, m. Mary Turner (1790-1866) on 26 October 1811 St Andrew by Wardrobe, City of London. Then in Dr Williams non-parochial registers six of their children were baptised together on 31 July 1837 and each birth is recorded and dated as of “Richard Brain and Mary daughter of James Turner”, of Butt Lane St Paul Deptford in 1812 and of No 20 New Row in the parish of St Paul, Deptford 1814-1821 and at St Nicholas in 1824, witnesses to births of first five were Elizabeth Sheen midwife and Eliz Turner, and then Mary Ann witnesses were Sarah Mann, J Packwood midwife Rob Hatfull and Elizabeth Turner. Richard lived in Croydon in 1841, 1851 and 1861, died 1875 at St Pancras. [posted by Michael Cullimore41 on Mundia website] No child named James although Mary was daughter of James Turner 1754-1810. In 1841 at Surrey Street Croydon in Surrey was Richard Brain 56 a currier, Mary 51, Hannah 21, Mary 17, all born elsewhere, (presumably in Kent) Benjamin 14, Elizabeth 12 and Robert 10 all born in the county. In 1851 Mary was living with her son Robert nearby and Richard was at 27 Surrey Street leather seller age 66, Mary Ann 27 and Robert 19. No 26 was occupied by Richard Shortland a brush maker. In 1861 at 26 Surrey Street Croydon was Richard Brain 76 a brush seller from Chislehurst in Kent, Mary 71 from Deptford, Mary Ann 36 daughter from Deptford and Ann a daughter in law 47 from Blackheath (presumably Richard junior’s wife) Richard Brain leather cutter and brush seller died 18 December 1864 in Croydon district aged 80 , and Mary on 2 June 1866 in Croydon aged 76. Burials at Croydon? In 1865 probate proved by the oaths of Thomas Brain of 37 Caledonian Road, Leather seller and Benjamin Brain of Kennington Lane leather seller, effects under £1500. [Principal registry] Widow of 26 Surrey Streeet, Croydon, whose effects of under £1500 were granted to Thomas Brain of Calendonian Road, Islington, leather seller and Benjamin Brain of 71 lower Kennington Lane, leather seller. Mary Turner bap 1790 Deptford da of James Turner (1754 Wichling -7 Sept 1810) and Elizabeth Deilies 1760-1841.
