Biography

Mary Ann Brazil was born in the year 1853 in Limerick, County Limerick, Ireland to Patrick Brazil and Mary Rice.

We do not have any information at this time regarding her early life.

Mary Ann married Joseph Carley on 15 May 1868 at Rawal Pindi, Bengal, [British] India.^{[1] [2]} Mary Ann's father was in the same army unit as Joseph so perhaps that's how they met. They had twelve children:

After the birth of their first child, her husband completed his army service and they emigrated to New Zealand. They settled in Te Awamutu, Waikato.^[3]

Her husband died in 1905.

Mary Ann Carley died of influenza on 10 Nov 1918 at Albertland, Auckland, New Zealand.^{[4] [5]} This was at the height of the Spanish flu epidemic in New Zealand. She was buried on 12 Nov 1918 at Purewa Cemetery in Auckland.^{[6] [7]} She was 65 years old.

Research Notes

I do not have direct evidence of her birth, but she was 15 when she married in 1868 which makes her birth year 1853. According to her father's service records, he was from Limerick, Ireland and he didn't join the army until after 1853. This is confirmed by the death index.
