Biography

James Brickell aka James Corwin Brickell was born in 1850 in Cann, Dorset, England to John Brickell and Eliza (Brickell) Brickell. His birth was registered in Shaftesbury, Dorset in the first quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Brickell.^[1]

James Brickell, son of John & Eliza, was christened on 17 Jan 1850 in Cann.^[2]

In 1851 James Bricket [Brickell] (age 0) lived at Blanford H Road in Cann St Rumbold with his father John (35, Market Gardener), mother Eliza (34), and four siblings: George (8, Scholar), Emma (7, Scholar), Thomas (4), and Ellen (3).^[3]

James immigrated to the United States with his family in 1851: James Bicknell [Brickell] (infant) - with his father John (34, Farmer), mother Eliza (30), and four siblings: George (9), Emma (7), Thomas (5), and Ellen (3) - sailed aboard the ship B Bark Elizabeth from Bristol to New York in November 1851.^[4]

James Corwin Brickell (age 36, Bachelor, Carpenter, born Shaftesbury England, son of John & Emma Eliza) married Adeline Buckler (age 22, Spinster, born Guelph Ontario, daughter of Thomas & Ann Jane) on 18 Sep 1886 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.^[5]

James and Adeline had four children:

In 1891 Jas C Brickell (age 40, Saw Mill Foreman) lived in Johnson St Ward, Victoria City with his wife Addie (22) and son Chas (3), as well as three lodgers: John Buckler (21, Plumber), Frank Vollun (37, Mill Hand), and Georgia Evans (20, Tailoress).^[6]

James Corwin Brickell registered as a voter in Oak Park, Sacramento, California on 25 Jul 1898 - he was 45 years old; he was born in England; his occupation was machine hand; he was 5 feet 9 inches with a dark complexion, blue eyes, and gray hair.^[7]

In 1900 James C Brickell (age 40 [~50], Machinist R R~~[?]) lived at Park Ave in Sutter Township, Oak Park with his wife Adeline (30) and three children: Charles A (12, At School), Winnie M (8, At School), and Teddie (2).^[8] According to this census, James & Adeline had been married 15 years; James was born in February; James immigrated in 1860, his wife in 1882, and daughter Myrtle in 1892 [their two sons having been born in the US].

In 1910 James C Brickell (age 45[~60], Sawyer Mill) lived at 5508 Kensington Place in Seattle, King County, Washington with his wife Addie (35, Clerk Dry Goods) and four children: Charles (21, Mate Steamship), Winnie (18, Clerk Dry Goods), Teddie (11), and Consuelo (8).^[9]

James and Adeline divorced before 1916 (at which time Adeline married William Charles Ansell).

In 1920 James C Brickell (age 69, Mill-wright for Rubber Co) was a boarder at 621 Harrison St W in Kent, King County in the household of Mary Viola Rhodes (66).^[10] According to this census, James immigrated in 1850 and was a naturalized citizen.

James Charles Brickell passed away on 19 Feb 1929 in Seattle, Washington - his address was 152 E 58th; he was divorced; his occupation was retired miller; he was 79 years old, born 14 Feb 1850 in London; his father was John Brickell, born London; his mother was Eliza Brickell, born London; his wife was Addie Brickell.^[11]
