John was born in 1885, the son of LeBaron Briggs and Mary DeQuedville. He attended Harvard, graduating in 1906; the following year, he married Margaret Floyd Atwater in her native city of Helena, Montana, and they had two children, both born after they had moved to Minnesota where he became a teacher, and in 1914, headmaster, at St. Paul Academy. The marriage apparently ended in divorce in 1917; Margaret's 1918 passport application includes a handwritten note across part of its face, "Divorce decree dated April 20, 1917" (remainder illegible). [Note: this squares with my personal recollection of her son, John DeQ. Briggs. Jr., saying that his parents had divorced. -- Christopher Childs (WT Childs-1516)]
Daughter Henrietta Wood Briggs was born 09 Sep 1908 at Plymouth, Massachusetts, where John's parents had a home; she married ____ Payson; Henrietta died 27 March 1942, and was buried at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts (though she is also memorialized in the family plot in Plymouth). Son John DeQuedville Briggs, Jr., was born in St. Paul in 1911.
John, Sr., remarried, in 1925, Marjorie Scott Winslow, born in River Forest, Illinois, in 1900. They had children Mary, born about 1927, and Winslow, born about 1929. John remained headmaster at St. Paul until 1948. He died in 1965, and is buried in the family plot at Oak Grove Cemetery in Plymouth.
