Biography

John William Brill was born in Virginia in March 1865, the son of William Brill and Ellenor Cooper Engle[1] After his father's death his mother moved to Illinois; it is unclear if this move occurred before or after her marriage to Robert Edwards, but by 16 June 1880 the family is in Pilot Grove Township, Hancock County, Illinois.[2] On 2 May 1891 he married Rachel Annetta 'Nettie' Coy in Greene County, Ohio.[3]

John and Nettie had twelve children:[4][5][6]

APPLICATION FOR LETTERS OF ADMINISTATION
The State of Ohio, Greene County.
Rachel Brill, being duly sworn, says that J. W. Brill, late a resident of R. 4, Xenia, in said County, died on or about the 23 day of November, 1935, at residence, leaving Rachel Brill, his surviving spouse, of the age of 63 years, whose post office address is Route 4, and the following persons known next of kin:

Total $11,000.00
The amount of all indebtedness the deceased had against the undersigned is none.
The undersigned further states that the decedent at the time of his death was engaged in the business of farming, located at Route 4, Xenia.
There is not to her knowledge any last Will and Testament of said intestate.

The undersigned makes application for the appointment of appraisers of the real estate and personal property of the said decedent, and suggests the names of Sam Hartman, Amos Stauffer and Grover Wolf as suitable disinterested persons for such appraisers.

KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS, That we, Rachel Brill and Fidelity & Deposit Company of Maryland, are held and firmly bound to the State of Ohio, in the penal sum of Seven Thousand ($7,000.00) Dollars, to the payment of which sum well and truly to be made we do bind ourselves, our heirs, executors and administrations, jointly and severally by these presents.
Signed by us and dated at Xenia, Ohio, this 26th day of December, 1935.
THE CONDITION OF THE ABOVE OBLIGATION IS SUCH, That if the above bond Rachel Brill Administrator of the Estate of J. W. Brill, deceased, late of Beavercreek Township in the County of Greene and State aforesaid:
  1. Make and return to the Court, on oath, within the time required by law, a true inventory of all moneys, goods, chattels, rights and credits of the deceased, which are by law to be administered, which come to her possession or knowledge, an d an inventory of the real estate of the decedent;
  2. Administer according to law all the moneys, goods, chattels, rights and credits of the deceased, the proceeds of any action for wrongful death, or of any settlement, with or without suit, of a wrongful death claim, and the proceeds of all his real estate sold, which come to the possession of the Administrator or to the possession of any person for her;
  3. Render upon oath a just and true account of her administration, at the time or times when required by the Court or the law. Failing so to do for thirty days after she has been notified by the Probate Judge of the expiration of the time, she may forthwith be enters upon its journal that such delay was necessary and reasonable;
  4. Pay any balance remaining in her hands, upon the settlement of her accounts, to such persons as the Court or the law directs;
  5. To deliver the Letters of Administration into Court in case a Will of the deceased, be thereafter duly proved and allowed;
Faithfully and honestly discharge the duties devolving upon her as such Administrators; then this obligation to be void; otherwise to remain in full force and virtue in law.

Wright, Judge of the Probate Court within and for said County, in the name and by the authority of the State of Ohio, do by these presents MAKE KNOWN, that in said Probate Court at Xenia, Ohio, on the twenty-sixth day of December, 1935, administration of all and singular the moneys, goods, chattels, rights and credits and real estate which were of J. W. Brill, deceased, late of said County, has been granted unto Rachel Brill, whose duty it shall be to:
