Biography

James was born in 1849^[1] in Howden, Yorkshire, England, where he lived with his parents, John Broader and Ann Graves, in 1851.^[2]

At the time of the 1861 census, James worked as a farm servant for the Hairsine family in Yokefleet, Yorkshire.^[3] He lived with his parents in Eastrington, Yorkshire, in 1871;^[4] in 1881 he worked for the Hawkins family in Laytham, Yorkshire.^[5]

The 1891 census saw him working in Aughton, Yorkshire,^[6] and 10 years later he worked in Bubwith, Yorkshire. He was a farm carter.^[7] In 1911 James was employed as a horseman by the Story family in Laytham.^[8]
