Immigration

We have been unable to find entry documents in the name of Broderick. However, the information provided on the death Certificate of wife Margaret ties in very well with the arrival details in the name of "Broderibb". Edward and Margaret had only one child together, and the Broderibbs arrived together with a young Mary. Additionally, referring to the original manifest -there may be an error in the transcription and the name may be written as "Broderick". Edward arrived in Port Philip Bay on Feb 25, 1841 at the age of 32 aboard the "Georgiana". He had departed from Liverpool with wife Margaret/Mary (28) and daughter Mary (4). The family is listed as originating in Tipperary. [3] Based on death information of daughter Mary it looks like the family lived in initially in Tasmania for ten years relocating to Victoria when Mary was 11. While in Tasmania Edward was appointed Sheriff to the courts in Launceston. https://stors.tas.gov.au/NI/1781107 In 1842 Edward found himself the victim of crime. Larceny.— At the sale of furniture held Iast week, at the British hotel, Mr. Edward Broderick, a clerk in the Union Bank, pur-chased a quantity of delf, which he entrusted to the care of a person named Grady, who employed a man named Joseph Watson to convoy it to Mr. Broderick's residence. On the way thither the fellow was successful in purloining a few articles, with which he, a few hours afterwards, entered the Commer-cial Inn, and selecting a person whom he sup-posed likely to become a purchaser, he offered his booty for sale. By a curious coincidence, the party to whom they were thus offered, happened to be the purchaser of the identical package of delf from which they were abstracted, and recognizing his property, he called a constable, and con-signed the rascal to his custody. On the case being brought before the police bench on the following day, the above facts were deposed to, and the prisoner was committed to take his trial. Since the above was in type we are given to understand that the Crown Prosecutor has decided that the de-positions in the case are insufficient to place Watson on his trial, consequently he must necessarily, for a time, be again, let loose upon society. [4]

In July 1850 to August 1850 there are a number of advertisement notices that Edward secured work as a Reporter in Gippsland for the newspaper. Edward was working as a reporter for the newspaper from 1850. NOTICE. MR EDWARD BRODERICK has been appointed Gipps Land Reporter for the Daily News  [5]

in September 1850 Edward was charged as the 'late lock up keeper' in Alberton with falsely incarcerating a person, and with obtaining money from persons under the guise of 'debt collecting' and using the funds for personal use. His employment was terminated with scathing words from the Magistrate about his character and that the forces should be selective about who they employ. :[6]

information about Edward becomes hazy from this point forward. . His wife Margaret passed away in 1855 in Alberton.

Death of Spouse: Margaret died in August 1855 at the residence of John Griffith. [7] Edward was away from home when Margaret passed and Mary was the informant. She posted an advertisement in the paper: GIPPS LAND.-Edward Broderick is earnestly requested to communicate immediately with his daughter Mary as her mother is dead. Write to the Post Office, Tarraville, [8]

There are a number of advertisements run throgh the month of September: GIPPSLAND. - Edward Broderick is earnestly requested to communicate imme-diately with his daughter Mary, as her mother is dead. Write to the Post Office, Tarraville Gipps Land._178 sep 8 [9]

RESEARCH CHALLENGE - Death based on Margaret's death certificate - it would appear they lived in both Tasmania and Victoria. On Margaret's death certificate he is not listed as deceased - but Mary his daughter is the informant of the death.

DEATH: Edward Broderick (aka 'Broady" ) that died aged about 78 in Orville. Broady died suddenly and unexpectedly being found lying on the ground with is head in a 'pool of blood' and the coronial inquiry was that he 'burst a blood vessel'. The death occurred in 1885, which ties in reasonably well with birth and death information. Deponents statement are that he had lived in the Orville area for approximately 15 years and was destitute and unable to support himself financially and was cared for by his neighbours. His granddaughter Grace Harper (Nee Simpson) suffered from high blood pressure which would result in nosebleeds and ran a high risk of 'stroke".. We know that Edward had a brother john who lived in West Maitland because of the obituary for his daughter Mary. DEATH. Simpson -On the 8th March, at her late residence. [10] Trove Online Newspaper: [1] We also know that Edward arrived with his wife Margaret and daughter Mary, a few months before his brother John arrived with his own wife and their first child, and we know that john was travelling with his younger sister Anne in his care, (as well as another relative by the name of Ann Connell). We also know that Edward and his family were in Launcston Tasmania for about ten years before relocating to Victoria.

Research Notes

DNA links have been discovered to confirm the surname was initially Broderibb or Broderipp, and that Edward also had a sister in Tasmana (who died young), and this may have been why the family went to Tasmania. His brother was also recorded as a Broderibb/Broderipp and resided in NSW.

BRODRIBB

Brodbribb River in East Gippsland. Some older documents or news paper articles spelt it Brodbribb. It's a coincidence that I've got two profiles open to edit and they both have BRODRIBB in them!

"only daughter of the late Edward Broderick, Inniskillen Ireland"

Hi - The news article says something about Mary's father Edward being from ( or living at ) Inniskillen Ireland. Inniskillen is a fair way from Co Tipperary and Birr.

Heck Wheels i'm nearly two years late. yes that was an ongoing point of contention and after scouring documents (as this is one of my direct ancestors :S the norti boy), I believe we have eestablished that he was from Rosecrea in Tipperary. thanks for being on it although I dropped the ball for a while!
