James Gabriel Brown was born on 17 February 1849 in Rappahannock, Virginia, United States, son of Gabriel Brown (1825– ) and Elizabeth Beahm (1820–1900).^[1]

James (20) married Virginia Catherine Jenkins (20) (born on 24 March 1849 in Rappahannock, Virginia, United States; daughter of Walker Jenkins and Sarah Ellen (Nethers) Jenkins) on 13 May 1869 in Rappahannock, Virginia, United States.^[2] Their daughter was Ida Eunice Brown (12 January 1878 – 19 September 1906).

James died on 12 March 1931 in Culpeper, Virginia, United States, aged 82. He was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Culpeper, Culpeper County, Virginia.^[1]
