Research Notes

According to John A. R. Macdonald's 'The History of Blairgowrie', David was the "leesee of the principal hotel in the town, then Brown's Hotel; propretor of a coach, "Braes of Mar," which ran beween Perth and Braemar; who also ran stage-coaches to Coupar Angus and Dundee; carried on distilleries at Blairgowrie, Ballied, and Pitcarmic; and farmed Marlee, Thorngreen, Grange of Airlie, Auchteralyth, besides having sheep grazings in Inverness &c."

The hotel he owned in High St., Blairgowrie, was most likely the Queen's Hotel, later run by his son-in-law, Duncan McDonald.

Some of the information above is incorrect.

(1) David's father is unknown. His baptsm record only lists his mothers name

(2) His eldest son was James Duffus Brown (not James Dempsey Brown, who married Jane Ann Tulloch at Tynemouth, Northumberland in 1847. He died there in 1877.
