Biography
Philip grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania, also attending school there. He started working for local farms at a young age, and by the age of 14 was hired to help drive cattle 52 miles, from New Holland to Philadelphia. He later worked as a butcher, then as a clerk in a dry goods establishment. He then worked with his brother, John, as a hardware merchant. Following this, he opened his own mercantile, selling it later and more or less retiring. He traded in gold, stocks, and bonds during the Civil War, and did very well doing so. He was an active member of the Republican party.
