Biography

Catherine Elisabeth Brüseke was born 5 November 1804 in Lienen, Westphalia, and baptized on 11 November 1804 in the Evangelical Church in Lienen as Anna Catharina Elisabeth Brüseke. She married on 22 January 1836 Herman Heinrich Brauns in Lienen.

Catherine “Elisabeth” (Brüseke) Brauns probably died 14 March 1867 and is buried at St. Pauls UCC Cemetery, Marthasville. On 17 July 1867 Herman Brauns married Henriette Windan in Marthasville, Warren County. Herman Brauns is listed in the St. Paul’s Evangelical Church marriage record as born 2 February 1810 and Henriette Windan as born 20 March 1841. When I first saw the marriage record I thought she married the son Herman, not the father Herman, but his date of birth proves it was the father. At the time of their marriage, Herman was about 57 and Henriette was about 27 years old. Apparently the marriage lasted only about nine months.

In the estate of the father Herman Brauns, an inventory of his estate includes 92 acres of land described as follows:

“A tract of land situated in the County of Warren, Missouri and being a part of Lot No. Three of certain real estate sold by the order of the Circuit Court of Warren to wit, Ninety two acres more or less a part of said Lot and boundries as follows: Beginning at a set part in the centre of Tuque Creek from which a Burl Oak 18 inches in diameter bears S 35 W 100 links thence down said creek with its meanders S 4 1 ½ E 2 chains 50 links, S 37 ½ E 5 chains S 50 links, S 49 ½ E 5 chains 50 links S 43 E 3 chains and 50 links to where the Philipps Miller line crosses said Creek and corner to the Stogsdill survey thence with said Miller’s survey S 53 W 13 chains 37 links to a set stone corner to said Millers survey, thence with said Millers line S 38 E 3 chains and 65 links to a corner thence S 5 2/2 W 54 chains to the north bank of Missouri river, thence up said river N 23 W 3 chains, thence S 35 E 67 chains to the beginning.”

In April 1868 a sale was held of Herman Brauns assets and among the buyers were several family members (two sons-in-law and his widow) who purchased the following items: Henry Dubbert—iron rake 50 cents; 2 rakes 25 cents; 2 corn knives 40 cents; harness $3; 9 cords of wood $15.75; sow & pigs $11.10; 50 bushels corn at 70 cents a bushel $35; hogshead $3.50; rifle $17.50; 2 barrels 40 cents; ½ of a straddlebox $2; ½ of a reaper $65.50; rope $1.30; mare sorrel $220; horse $16; bridle 30 cents; corn shovel 85 cents; pair doubletrees $2.25; wheelbarrow $6.10; plow, $8.50; 75 fence posts $5; and 34 ½ acres in wheat at 13.80 per acre, $328.50.

Frederich Schuster—clevis, 35 cents; red cow & calf, $15.25; heifer, $19.50; watch, $22.50; collar, 75 cents; and plow, $6.50.

Widow Brauns—3 hogs 2nd choice at $5.75 a head, $17.25.

Other items sold included 30 hogs, 4 cows, 3 heifers, 2 steers, 2 cradles, and much more totaling $1710.90. Later Henriette Brauns signed a document stating, “formerly the widow of Herman Brauns deceased do select for my dower which I have in third personal estate of said deceased, a child’s part.” I’m assuming that Henriette and Herman had a child based on the cradles that sold and her reference to a child’s part of his estate.

Burial
