David was born in 1866 at Foscott, Buckinghamshire. He was the son of William Bryant and Eliza Jennings. ^[1]

The family emigrated to New Zealand arriving 15 July 1874 aboard the Peeress from Buckinghamshire to Canterbury. David was recorded as "Octavius". ^{[2] [3]}

In 1893 he married Annie Maria Metson, daughter of Mr. R. Metson, curator of Temuka Domain. ^[4]

He was bandmaster of the Temuka Volunteer Band for 13 years. ^[3]

He passed away 5 March 1938 age 72 at his residence in Temuka, and is buried at Temuka Cemetery with wife Annie Maria. The other surviving kin were: ^{[5] [6] [3]}
