At the start of Operation DESOTO, a relief mission under the OPCON of the 5th Marines was launched to rescue the crew of a downed aircaft and Company C was flown in to participate. Moving towards the area of the downed aircraft, Company C began to receive hostile fire which intensified until the Marines approached the southern edge of Vinh Binh when they were unable to proceed any further.
Heavy automatic weapons and small arms fire were directed from the north, west, and south at the men, unable to move forward and having taken a number of casualties, the Marines were pulled back from the fortified enemy infested village complex. Four of their men were killed in the action including PFC Bryant who died as a result of the enemy rifle fire, nine Marines were wounded.
