Thomas Edwin Bryar was born on 23 January 1888, in Sandhurst, Victoria, Australia, to Thomas Bowden Bryar (1860 - 1928) and Eliza Jane Watson (1857 - 1938). He was the fourth child, and second son, born to the couple. He would be one of six children, four of whom would survive to adulthood.
He married Veola Harriet Bartlett (1894 - 1973) in 1912, and they would have five children together, four sons and a daughter. Only three; Crofton (James), Noel, and Elvie, would survive to adulthood.
