William was the son of John Buchanan and Margaret Livingston.

He was ordained Deacon and Priest on 29 July 1627 and was presented as Dean of Killala on 21 February 1628/9 [Lib. Mun.] ; and installed in June following, (ff.) He was also presented to the deanery of Achonry on 21 February 1629. [Rolls Offic] .
In 1635 he exchanged, with Robert Forgie, the Deanery of Killala for the Precentorship of Killala. Robert Forgie appears to be his brother in law.
He was collated Prebendary of Newchapel (Cashel) on 4 January 1638/9 [FF].
On 28 February 1661/2, he resigned the deanery of Achonry and became Dean of Tuam, by patent dated 21 June 1661. He was presented again, on the 29th of March of the following year. [Rolls Office.]
He died in 1669.
