Will Transcript

In the name of God, Amen.
I, William Burge, Senr. of the County of Dinwiddie Va.., being in sound mind and memory, do hereby make and ordain this my last will and testement in manner and form following.
Item 1. It is my will and desire that all my just debts be first paid by my here after named executrix and executor by sale of such property as they may think best, the balance of my property to remain all together both real and personal during my wife Rebeckah's natural life, and at her death, all the property as above mentioned to be equally divided between five of my children; namely Elizabeth, Nancy, Mary, Joel H., and Daniel H. Burge to them and their heirs forever. Thomas, Peterson, and William Burge Jr. having already received their portions. Lastly, I do hereby nominate and appoint my wife Rebeckah and Daniel H. Burge my lawful Executrix and Executor to this my last will and testament, whereof I have hereunto affixed my hand and seal this eleventh day of October, eighteen hundred & thirty.

At a court held for Dinwiddie County on the 15th Nov. 1830. This last will and testament of William Burge, decd., was proved by the oaths of Frederick Jackson & Winfield Jones, subscribing witnesses, and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of Daniel H. Burge, Executor therein named, who made oath thereto, and together with Isaac Oliver and Jesse Spiers, his securities, entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of two thousand dollars, conditioned as the law directs, a certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate of the said will in due form.

  • 4 Feb 1808: A paper was presented as the Last will and testament of James Hall by John and William Hall. The witnesses were unacquainted with the handwriting, James and William declined consulting other witnesses and withdrew the motion to prove the will at this time...
"On motion of William Hall and William Burge, administration granted them on the estate of James Hall who made oath and gave bond etc."[2]
  • 6 Aug 1812: James' inventory was taken 17 Feb 1808. The appraisers were James Holloway, Reuben Jackson, and Thomas Eldridge. His son-in-law, William Burge was administrator.[3]
  • 8 Jul 1814: Account of James Hall estate, William Hall, an administrator deceased as of 9 Mar 1809, James C. Bailey his administrator, net balance due James Hall estate £26/9/6; Benja. Wyche & Peter Booth, Sussex County Court[4]
  • 1 Apr 1818: Account of James Hall estate with William Burge, administrator, £238/4/1 due to William Burge; William & John Parham, Sussex County Court[5]
