DEATH OF EX-CONSTABLE BURGETT.

The news was telegraphed to Lismore from Sydney yesterday that the death had occurred of Constable Haughton James Frederick Burgett, who recently retired on pension from the police force. The deceased was universally esteemed, and had been stationed at Lismore as lockup-keeper for fourteen years, retiring on January 31st after a record of 35 1/2years as a mounted and foot constable. The late Constable Burgett, who was almost sixty years of age, was born in England, his father being a barrister, and commenced his education in London. He finished his studies in Germany, and on his return to London was engaged as a clerk in the Bank of England. He was well educated, and could speak French and German. He came out to Australia about the year 1878, and landed in Victoria, after which he went across to the Riverina and followed droving pursuits, all the time picking up a great deal of colonial experience. His footsteps next turned in the direction of Sydney, where he joined the mounted police in June, 1880. From the depot he was sent to Armidale as the head station for the northern district, and subsequently was stationed at Inverell, Glen Innes, and Bendemeer. On the occasion of his marriage he was promoted to Drake as officer in charge of the then famous gold mining centre. His next move was to Ballina, and after a stay of some years at the seaside, town was transferred to Casino. In December, 1901, the late Constable Burgett was transferred to Lismore as lockup keeper, holding the position until the date of his retirement from duty. When leaving Casino he left the mounted force, his change to the foot police being necessary owing to an injury sustained through a fall from a horse. The late Constable Burgett became ill in October last, and had to be operated upon. His condition, however, did not improve, and he died yesterday morning, the cause of death being a malignant growth. He leaves a widow and five sons and two daughters. The sons are Messrs.George Burgett (Casino), Haughton Burgett (Alstonville), Leslie Burgett (Young), John Burgett (Lismore), and Fred. Burgett, who is a member of the Australian Expeditionary Forces at Enoggera Camp. The daughters are Mrs. Wood (Lismore, wife of Constable Wood), and Miss Kitty Burgett (Lismore). Mrs. and Miss Burgett were with the deceased in his last moments. The Lismore police, on hearing the sad news of the death of their old comrade, arranged for a wreath to be placed on the coffin.
