Biography

Thomas (Burgh) de Burgh lived during the medieval period.

Thomas' coat of arms were argent on a fess dancetty sable three bezants. [1]

Thomas 'the younger' [2] was the son of Philip Burgh and Emma de Richmond.

Thomas married Sara de Neville. By his marriage with Sarra, the Manors of Cawthorne and Walton. The former being held of the honour of Pontefract, the latter of the lordship or manor of Wakefield [3] [1]

Thomas 'the younger' held four fees of the honour of Richmond, including Hackforthm, Appleton, and Aysgarth in North Riding in 1166 at Yorkshire, England [1]

Thomas was mentioned in a event of Ismania 'Emma' de Richmond, his mother. Gift by Ismania, daughter of Roald the constable, with the consent of Thomas [de Burgh] her son and heir, to Easby abbey, which Roald her father had founded for her and her ancestors' right and patronage in the church of St. Wilfrid's of Langton between 1166 and 1189 at Great Langton, Yorkshire, England [2]

Thomas 'the younger' gave a gift to Easby abbey for the health of his soul, Ismania his mother, and Alan the constable, his lord and uncle, and the souls of Philip his father, Roald the constable, his grandfather, and Garsiena his grandmother between 1166 and 1189 at Yorkshire, England [2]

Thomas was one of the witnesses to a charter 5 granting 80 acres of land in Tanheld to the monks of Fountains Abbey by Hugh son of Gernegan [JernagotJ, the first husband of Maud de Morvill, who subsequently took Thomas de Burgh’s younger son Philip as her third husband [1]

Thomas witnessed a charter of Richard son of Acharius de Tunstal confirming his father’s three grants in Bolton to the monks of Rievaulx Abbey in 1193 [1]

Thomas was steward of duchess Constance (Constance Countess of Richmond, at that time the wife of Ranulph de Blundevill, Earl of Chester) in 1194 [2] [3]

Thomas and Sara de Neville confirmed to the prior of Monkbretton all the gifts made by Adam Fitz-Swane, and those of Sarra’s father and mother, William and Amabel le Nevill, to which he appended his seal — a man holding up his left arm, the right arm depending by his side: on the reverse, a man on a galloping horse: the legend— Sigillum Thome de Burg in 1195 [1]

Thomas was a witness, as was also Raold prior of Gisburn, to a grant by Conan de Asch to the church of St. Andrew of Marrick in Swaledale between 1196 and 1199[1]

Thomas de Burgh died D.S.P. in 1199 at Yorkshire, England [2] [1] His brother, Phillip succeeded him, than Phillip's son Thomas succeeded him. [3]
