Jim Burns was born on August 27, 1916, in Franklin, AR. When he was five years old, his family moved to Washington and eventually settled in Spokane, where his dad operated the Certified Food Shop. Jim attended North Central High School until 1936, when he transferred to the Spokane Telegraph School, where he received training to become a Railroad Telegrapher. After completing his training in 1937, the Great Northern Railroad hired him as a Telegraphy Clerk, assigned to the Quincy, WA railroad depot. He married Eleanor Florence Keller on November 19, 1937, and he was later transferred to various railroad stations throughout Washington State and British Columbia. In 1947, Jim was promoted to station agent in Quincy, WA, where he worked until his retirement in September, 1976. He also was a 40-year member of the Quincy Fire Department and, for several years, was a volunteer policeman and ambulance driver. Jim and Eleanor had four children and spent many happy years raising their family in Quincy. After battling cancer, Eleanor passed away on March 28, 1995. He later married longtime family friend, Lucille Williams of Quincy, on January 2, 1996, and the couple celebrated 15 wonderful years of marriage on January 2, 2011.
