Biography

The daughter of David Burns and Caroline (Dickinson) Burns, Ruth Burns was born in the village of Ontonagon, Michigan^[1] in 1896, residing there with her family.^[2] She married Joseph Cane (1899-1959), the son of James Cane and Rose Richards, marrying in Ontonagon Township, Michigan on June 28, 1913^[3] and having two children together:

1. Russell Cane (1913-1962)
2. Dorothy Ethlyn Cane (1917-2012)

They made their home in Carp Lake Township, Michigan, near Ontonagon, where her husband worked as a engineer at a copper stamp mill.^[4] Ruth and Joseph Cane separated before 1930; that year, Ruth and her sons lived in Dearborn, Michigan, where Ruth worked as an operator at a beauty shop.^[5] Ruth filed for divorce on July 14, 1931, which was granted on October 14, 1931.^[6]

Ruth remarried two weeks later, marrying John Francis O'Rourke (1897-1976), an electrician, the son of Charles Henry O'Rourke and Anna Burns, marrying in Flint Michigan on October 31, 1931^[7] and taking up residence in Ontonagon Township, Michigan, where Francis O'Rourke opened a tavern,^[8] The Shamrock bar.^[9]

Ruth O'Rourke passed away in Ontonagon, Michigan^[10] at the age of 91^[11] and is buried at Holy Family Catholic Church cemetery in Ontonagon, Michigan.^[12]
