Henry Burtenshaw's birth was registered in Worthing in the third quarter of 1850. His mother's maiden name was Cobby^[1]. He was born 3 June and baptised 28 July 1850 in Broadwater. His parents were James (a fisherman) and Eliza Burtenshaw^[2]

Early Years

In 1851 Henry and his 5 siblings were living with their mother in Worthing^[3]

In 1861 Henry was living with his mother and 4 siblings in Worthing^[4]

In 1871 Henry was living at 9 Clifton Road, Worthing with his father James (a fisherman), Mother Eliza and brother John. Henry was working as a plasterer^[5]

First Marriage and Children

Henry Burtenshaw and Eliza Chapman were married in Petersfield, Hampshire in 1877^[6]

In 1881 Henry and Eliza were living at 13 Hayes Place, Marylebone with their son Harry^[7]

Second Marriage

Henry Burtenshaw and Eliza Blackmore were married in St Marylebone, Westminster 30 August 1891. Henry was a widower aged 41. He was working as a plasterer and living at 99 North Street. His father was James Burtenshaw, a mariner. Eliza was a spinster aged 33, also living at 99 North Street. Her father was William Blackmore (deceased), a Blacksmith^[8]

In 1911 Henry and Charlotte (both aged 60) were living at 5 Cuthbert Street, Paddington. On the census they did not state the number of years they had been married but did write that they had had 4 children two of whom were still living^[9]
