U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Harvard University in 1803, taught school in Virginia, (1804-06), studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1807. Returning to New Hampshire, he commenced to practice law, was Sheriff of Rockingham County, (1810-13), clerk of the court of common pleas and a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, (1815-16). In 1817, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth Congress and to the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Congresses, serving until 1823. After leaving Congress, he served as an associate justice of the New Hampshire Court of Common Pleas, (1825-35).
