- Jane was the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Johnson) Buxton. She grew to adulthood in Derbyshire, England.
- She married John K. Smith, Apr 1833, Derbyshire, England. (Vol. 19, Pg. 288)
- Shortly after their marriage, they came to the United States and settled in Pennsylvania. Eight children had been born to them. Then John died leaving Jane with a house full of young children to raise.
- Census records show that her boys went to work in the steel mills, as puddlers and nailers, at very young ages.
- In about 1870, she and her six youngest children moved West and took up farming in Johnson County, Missouri."
