Biography

Lillie "Lily" Mae Buxton was born in November 1877 in Newton County, Missouri. She is the daughter of an unknown father and Eliza Jane Buxton. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Lillie Mae Buxton married Noel Alexander Hutchings on November 22, 1899 at the home of the her grandfather John Buxton, south of Newtonia Township, Newton, Missouri, Elder S.M. Skaggs officiating. The couple soon moved to a farm near Neosho, Newton, Missouri. [5] [6]

In a November 23, 1899, newspaper Wedding Announcement, it was stated, "-- Hutchens - Buxton Wedding -- Married on yesterday, November 22, 1899, at 4 P.M. at the home of the bride's grandfather, John Buxton, south of Newtonia, Miss Lilly Buxton to Mr. Noel Hutchens, also of near Newtonia, Eld. S.M. Skaggs officiating. The attendants were Mr. Fayette DePriest and Miss Mary Buxton. The bride is a sweet and loving dispositioned girl and will make her new home a happy one for to her husband. She was attired in light blue trimmed in white and looks very pretty. The groom is an upright young man of high morals, well fitted to make his bride's life a happy one. A fine supper was partaken of by about thirty guest. The young couple will go to house-keeping soon on a farm near Neosho. The NEWS joins the many friends of the newly wedded pair in extending congratulations." [7] [8]

The 1900 Federal Census, taken June 27th, listed Lillie as living with her husband Noel and her mother-in-law Kiturah A. "Winnie" Gunn Dry Hutchings in Newtonia Township, Newton, Missouri. [9]

In a June 12, 1908, newspaper Obituary, it was stated, "-- Rocky Comfort Items -- Last Thursday morning about nine o'clock, Mrs. Noel Hutchens, who lived on the old Garner farm 1-1/2 miles west and 1/2 mile south of Newstead, hung herself. Mrs. Hutchens had sent two of her children to the field to carry some water to Mr. Hutchens who was plowing corn. The upstairs of their house was not completed and it was over a rafter that she tied five strands of binder twine and then preceded to take her life, by tying the twine around her neck and jumping off either a sack of peas or a stove. Interment was made Friday. [10][11]

Lillie passed away on June 4, 1908 in near Newstead in Franklin Township, Newton, Missouri at age 30. She was buried on June 5, 1908 in Dice Cemetery in Fairview, Newton, Missouri. [13] [14]
