Alice was born before 1185. She was the daughter of Osbert Cailly and Hildeburgh Baudemont. She passed away after 1223.[1]
Daniel Power's The Norman Frontier, pub. 2004, cites French archive sources for Alice's existence, for her being the wife of Stephen de Longchamp, and for the conclusion that previous historians had conflated her with her sister Petronilla.[1] Up to then, the general view was that her father Osbert had only two daughters, Matilda and Petronilla and that it was Petronilla whom Stephen de Longchamp married: Powicke's Loss of Normandy takes that view,[2] as did Foster in his Yorkshire Pedigrees[3] and, much more recently, Keats-Rohan in Domesday Descendants.[4]
