Biography

This profile is part of the Cain Name Study.

Charles, born 23 September 1892 in West Virginia,[1][2] was the son of Lorenza Dow Cain and Sarah Jane Robinson or Robison.[3] His father died 22 February 1900 in Pleasants, West Virginia,[4] leaving his widow to care for four children on her own as a hotel keeper.[2]

The 1900[2] and 1910[5] census show Charles as living with his widowed mother, half-brother Joseph Henry Bills (b. 1886),[6] sisters Sue Emeline (b. 1894)[2] and Bonnie O Cain (b. 1896).[2] Also living with the family in 1900 were two lodgers.[2] One of the lodgers, Thomas Butcher, became his mother's third husband—apparently shortly after the enumeration. On the 1910 census she is Mrs. Butcher, married ten years, but Thomas did not live with them in 1910.[5]

Having grown up in such an unstable environment, Charles was not equipped for a successful marriage. At the time of his marriage to Lotta Marie Robenstine on 28 February 1914 in Portage County, Ohio,[1] he was a teamster living in Tallmadge, Ohio.[7] They had one son Richard Urias (b. 1915).[8][9][10] While there is nothing certain regarding the end of the marriage, it ended before 1920, when Lotta is shown as Mrs. Taylor living with her parents.[11]

No further records definitively illuminate the balance of Charles's life. He may have remarried, died, or moved away.

Research Notes

  • I can find no further records for Charles beyond 1914--neither death/burial nor census records.
  • His wife Lotta is remarried by 1920, but there is no indication of whether she and Cain divorced or he died (WWI?). A marriage record for Lotta and Taylor might give some idea what happened to Charles.
