Military Service

During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company E of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 20 years old, single and working as a laborer when he enlisted on 29 March 1863 from Trenton, New Jersey. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.[1]

Research Notes

Nancy (b. 1790-1795 New Jersey) and Joseph Calaman / Callaman (b. 1788 New Jersey) were living in Ewing of Mercer County, New Jersey in 1850 and 1860[2]. Perhaps his parents or grandparents, and his namesake?
