Ernest enlisted WWII with the Royal Navy - Ord. Seaman P/JX-388775. Ernest served on the HMS Egret.
On the 27 August 1943, the Egret was sunk in the Atlantic Ocean by a German air attack.
Of a crew of 279 only 35 survived. Ernest, just 18, was one of the 244 men lost in the attack.
HMS Egret was the first ship ever to be sunk by a guided bomb.
