Robert was born 6 May 1832 at Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, Canada, and baptized 21 May. He was the son of John Campbell and Mary Sneden. ^{[1] [2]}

In 1867 at Onehunga Presbyterian Church, he married Sarah Sexey, a member of Ngāti Maniapoto, from Te Awamutu. ^{[3] [4] [5]}

He was a surveyor in charge of a large tract of country in the Pirongia district. ^[5]

In 1884 he filed for bankruptcy. ^[6]

He was a licensed interpreter of Māori. ^[7]

He passed away 24 Oct 1912 at his residence Te Puhi, Te Awamutu. ^{[1] [8] [9]}
