John Cann came from Greenwich, London, was baptised on the 5th February in the parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Woolwich, Kent, England. His parents were John Cann and Sarah. (this is the district of Woolwich Arsenal).
John Cann was a builder and bricklayer who emigrated to Nelson, New Zealand settling at first in Petone, Wellington, before moving to Collingwood, Golden Bay, where he leased Waitapu wharf at Takaka.
John Cann was chairman of the school board and chaired many other local body meetings.
