  • From hand written copy of the obituary written by Rev. Albert G. Caris, son of Squire A. Caris:

Squire A. Caris, son of Matthias and Hannah C. Caris was born in Lincoln Twp., Morrow Co. Ohio. He was one of ten children, nine boys and one girl. Of these, his sister, older than he, Mrs. E. W. Ogg of Mt. Vernon, Ohio and his youngest brother, Harland F. Caris of Cardington, Ohio survive. Sunday, Nov. 3, 1940 Mr. Caris's earthly stay was ended at the age of 89 years and 4 months. His schooling was that furnished by the local country school and the early high school of Cardington. At the age of 16 he passed the teachers' examination and began teaching in his home district. He was married to Sophronia E. Warner, May 17, 1874. To this Union were born 2 daughters and three sons. Both daughters died in childhood. The three sons, Albert G. and Vaughn B. of Columbus, Ohio and Percy W. of Trenton N.J. survive. His wife preceded him in death, Dec. 29, 1938, after more that 64 years of married life. In 1881 Mr. Caris entered the ministry in the Christian Church on a part time basis. Beginning in 1886 he moved to Somerford, Ohio to take charge of the village school and the church there. Until 1893 he continued this type of double work acting all the time as pastor of two or three village or rural charges and teaching in the villages of Somerford, Plattsburg, and Brighton. At times during these years, his weekly trip to visit his churches necessitated traveling 70 miles by horse and buggy. No matter how severe the weather, the trip would be made. After 1893 and until his retirement, he gave his full time to pastoral work. During his active ministry Mr. Caris served many village and rural churches, among them being Somerford, Vienna, Plattsburg, Watkins, Raymond, Williamsport, Clarksburg, Wilson's Chapel, Enon, and Westerville, all of Ohio and Ashton Illinois While serving churches in Central Ohio and he was very active in the work of the Ohio Central Christian Conference and served as secretary of that body for many years. When he retired, from full time pastoral service he purchased a home in Defiance, Ohio to live near his son Alber G. Although retired from active service, he very frequently assisted in the services of most of the churches of that vicinity. Throughout all of his active life, he was deeply interested in Temperance work and gave his energy and influence freely to it. In 1937, he and his wife, no longer able to carry the responsibility of keeping their own home, went to Columbus to live with their sons. In addition to the brothers and sisters and the three sons already mentioned as surviving, he leaves nine children and four great grandchildren. ~Obituary written by his grandson Albert Garfield Caris - a wonderful tribute to his grandfather.
