Biography

John 'Jack' Carkeek was born on 22 Jan 1861 in Michigan, USA, the son of Thomas Carkeek and Elizabeth C Penberthy, ^[1] (a first cousin to the actor Sir Henry Irving).

In 1870 he was living with his parents and two younger siblings in Marquette, Michigan. ^[2]

He was a champion of Cornish wrestling; up until 1882, he wrestled just in Michigan, and then afterwards in Wisconsin, Iowa and Montana. He also fought under the name Jack O'Brien.

In 1880 he was living with his first wife Bell in Calumet, Michigan. ^[3]

In 1888 he was arrested in Chicago for two counts of swindling by means of a fake contests.

On 17 May 1895 he married Ella A. Burbank. ^[4]

Carkeek was a member of a swindling crew known as the Mabray gang. In 1910, while using the name of Jack Fletcher, he was charged in San Francisco for participation in the fixing of wrestling matches, and served two years in prison before the case was ultimately dismissed.

In 1913 he pleaded guilty to attempted swindling and was sentenced to 6 months.

On 25 Sept 1916 he married Jennie Pollock McPhie. ^[1]

He died in Havana, Cuba on 12 Mar 1924. After his death, the U.S. Consul General wrote:

Cause of Death: Pronounced by Dr. Alfredo Comas, Virtudes 107, Habana, to be apoplexy

Remarks: Mr. Carkeek arrived in Habana on February 29, 1924, on the s.s. LAFAYETTE. Mrs. Carkeek came to Hababa to accompany the remains to New York. Mr. Carkeek had been using the name John Fletcher as an alias during part of his stay here.
